The proper size instrument - I will be in communication with you as to the proper size needed for your child.
Rosin All students need to have a box of rosin, even string bass players. Rosin does break and crack; when it is unusable, the student needs to purchase new rosin. Any brand will do for all instruments except bass students. Bass students will need Pops brand (round, red container). All students must purchase a box of rosin each year.
Soft cloth - All students need a soft cloth like a washcloth to dust the wood of the bow and instrument after playing. Excess rosin wears on the finish and wood.
Required books - Each level of orchestra is required to have its own books. Please note what is required for your child based upon in which orchestra she or he is.
A music stand - Students need to have a folding wire stand upon which they can place music securely. Practicing in the proper position is vital to a student being successful and a stand promotes such posture.
A bag to carry music and supplies - Folding up music or cramming music in the instrument case is not acceptable and will affect a student’s grade. A music folder will be provided for each student; students are required to purchase a small bag in which to keep the folder as well as other materials.
Shoulder rest or sponge - 5th grade Violin and viola players (Beginning Orchestra) need a contoured sponge made specifically for them. Concert and Symphonic: (6th-8th grade). Students using a ¾, 4/4 size violin, or 13” or 14”, or Intermediate viola are required to use a shoulder rest.
Rock stop - Cellos and basses need what we call a rock stop (or donuts). This enables the endpin to sit securely and keeps the instrument from sliding along the floor.
Humidifier - All students should invest in a humidifier. This keeps the wood from cracking in the wintertime. This is vital for our older and expensive instruments.
Mute - Concert and Symphonic students are required to have a mute for their instruments. A Torte brand is recommended (black, rubber).
Metronome and tuner - These will greatly assist students at any level, especially more advanced students. I will talk with you if I feel your child is in need for these. These are not required.
